I always worry about using eggs past the date on the carton. I worry that I am going to make people sick by using an egg past the sell-by date. I decided to do some research to see how to tell if an egg is fresh.
Eggs are not cheap and we rarely see coupons for them. I am hoping that by knowing how to tell if an egg is fresh we will all be able to save money on eggs. I know that I have probably thrown out dozens of eggs that were perfectly good just because the carton was past the sell-by date.
As with everything if you are worried then don't use the egg. This is merely a guide in hopes of saving a bit of money on purchasing eggs.
How to tell if an egg is fresh...
Place the egg in a bowl or pan with enough water to cover the egg.
If the egg lies on its side on the bottom it is very fresh
If the egg stands up and bobs on the bottom it isn't quite as fresh and should be used quickly.
If the egg floats on the surface, discard!

This is a great project to do with kids. They can learn early about food safety and how to tell if an egg is fresh. Plus it is fun to draw a smiley face on an egg. LOL!
