Crockpot Chicken Noodle Soup
Growing up I always heard that Chicken Noodle Soup was the cure-all for being sick, not feeling good or whatever ailment that needed to be cured.
If we had a cough, we had a bowl of Chicken Noodle Soup If we sneezed we had a bowl of classic Chicken Soup if we... well you can use your imagination for all the ailments we were served scratch made Chicken Noodle Soup.
I now feel like crockpot chicken noodle soup is the perfect comfort food. It is so dang easy to make and always tastes amazing. Pair it with one of these epic sides for soup for a complete meal.
Ingredients
- Boneless skinless chicken breasts/chicken thighs /shredded chicken
- Water
- Chicken bouillon cubes
- Carrots
- Celery stalks
- Fettuccine pasta noodles or wide egg noodles
- Salt and pepper
Optional - zucchini, basil leaves, fresh herbs, garlic, yellow or white onion, oregano, fresh parsley, thyme, lemon juice, and/or rosemary.
Chicken - If you are using frozen chicken make sure to thaw it before starting the recipe.
Equipment Needed
vegetable chopper - This is a huge time saver for chopping veggies.
Crockpot - We suggest using a crockpot that has a digital timer that automatically switches the slow cooker to warm after a set amount of time. This helps make sure your soup cooks perfectly and you don't have to stress about what time it is going to be done.
Forks - to shred the chicken.
Spoon - to stir and taste the slow cooker chicken noodle soup before serving.
Recipe tips
I like to use chicken bouillon cubes and water to make our slow cooker chicken noodle soup. You could also use chicken stock/low sodium chicken broth if that is what you have available.
When you cut the carrots and celery, you can do a rough chop. They don't have to be perfectly even or look the same.
We normally put the entire chicken breast in the slow cooker to cook and then shred the chicken when it is done.
This recipe can be made on the stovetop in a Dutch oven or large pot. You will want to make sure you have a big enough pot for all the water.
The cooking time is about 4 to 6 hours. The longer the chicken noodle soup is in the crockpot the more the chicken will fall apart and be super soft along with the vegetables. You will want to make sure to cover and cook the soup until the chicken is fully cooked.
The fettuccine noodles should fully cook in the broth if you prefer an al dente noodle, I would make them on the stovetop and add them at the last minute.
You can add in a bay leaf if you love that flavor in the soup.
We hope you enjoy this delicious crockpot Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe! It is one of our favorites.
Store homemade chicken noodle soup leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat on the stove top or in the microwave.
Can you freeze chicken noodle soup?
Yes, we do suggest freezing the soup without the noodles. The noodles tend to get mushy.
Just follow the recipe without the noodles, allow to cool and store in freezer bags in the freezer.
The frozen chicken noodle soup should last for 3 to 4 months.

Sounds delicious. instead of the chicken cubes I would use stock instead - less sodium
Is the chicken put in raw then taken out and shredded then put back in?
Thanks

Thank you so much for this simple recipe! It is a great starting point for someone who doesn't have all the seasonings for other recipes. You really can make it your own!

Looks very simple and delicious! Do you add the chicken breasts raw and they break apart while cooking or do you need to remove them and shred the meat or is it cooked chicken?
Thanks!

What vegetable would you recommend to use instead of Celery? Thanks.

Tammilee
Hi Shannell,
You can use frozen chicken breasts, just make sure you check the internal temp of the chicken to make sure it is cooked all the way through before serving the soup.

Thank you:)

Do you chop up the chicken or cook it whole?
Michelle
Hi! This looks great! Have you ever tried cooking it on low, and do you know how long you would need to cook it?

This sounds wonderful, AND easy! I could use it right now, as I'm laying in bed fighting something, cold/sinus thing. Would you add any other seasoning?
Ashley
I was wondering if you could post the nutritional information: Calories, salt, serving size, fat, etc.
Tammilee
Ashley, I will see what I can do. I need to do some research to see the best way to figure out the nutritional info. I don't normally write it out for each of the recipes.

Hi Tammilee~ Do the noodles actually cook well in the crock pot? I don't need to parboil them or anything?
Tammilee
Hi, The noodles cooked great.
Lindsey
Two of my favorite things- soup and crock pots! Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to trying this soon!
Katie
This is probably a very dumb question, but do you cook the chicken first or do you put it in raw to cook in the broth and vegetables?
Tammilee
Hi Katie, There are no dumb questions. I put the chicken in the crock pot raw and let it cook with the broth.
