St. Maarten is one of our favorite islands to visit. The beaches are gorgeous, the people are friendly and there is so much to see and do. Today we are excited to share our Best things to do in St. Maarten on a Caribbean Cruise!
Best things to do in St. Maarten
Maho Beach
Maho Beach is a must-see if you are visiting St. Maarten. Located on the opposite side of the island from the cruise terminal you will need to take an excursion, taxi or rent a car to reach Maho Beach. One thing we suggest is googling the times of the place arrivals to St. Maarten.
That way you can time your visit to Maho Beach with the best times to see multiple planes. There are a couple of great beach bars located on either side of the beach that offer viewing areas, frosty beverages, and seats if you don't want to stand in the road. Be prepared for there to be a lot of people with the same idea! Taxies have a set rate and will be around the area to take you to and from Maho Beach.
Relax at the beach!
You can easily relax at the beach after taking the water taxi into town from the cruise port terminal. One tip is to walk a bit farther down the beach to save on the price of beach chairs and umbrellas. The farther we walked down the beach the cheaper the price was and a few vendors even added in a couple of beers to the price.
Shop
There is ample shopping in the cruise terminal and in town. You can find everything from tons of jewelry stores to local arts and crafts.
Sample the Guavaberry Liquor!
An island favorite Guavaberry Liquor is delicious! Try a Guavaberry cocktail in the port terminal or in town and you will not be disappointed! The island is one of the few places you can find Guavaberry so if you love it make sure and pick up a bottle to bring home with you. We bring these wine diapers with us to transport our liquor safely.
Explore the island in a rental car
We rented a Jeep during our last visit to St. Maarten. One thing to know is driving on the island is not really scary most of the time but there are moments.
Driving in town was a bit hectic and scary but the rest of the island was easy to maneuver. In town it felt like a lot of drivers were in a hurry and you are winding around one-way streets as you aim out of town. Once we were outside of town we did not have a problem driving around the island. You can't get to lost since most of the roads lead right back to the main city and there are great signs pointing to the cruise terminal.
Visit 2 countries in one day!
St. Maarten and Sint Martin are actually two different countries! You can visit the French and Dutch sides easily during your visit!
Visit a clothing-optional beach ...Orient Beach
On the French side of the island, you can visit Orient Beach and the Club Orient section which is clothing optional.
