I am going to admit that I have had the chance to do some true bucket list adventures in my life. One of those adventures that I honestly still can't believe happened was taking a drawing class with legendary Disney Animator Mark Henn. I get chills just typing this and not just because my drawing skills are non-existent.
Mark Henn was the directing animator and supervising animator of “Ariel” from The Little Mermaid!!!! But that is not all he has done! His work includes Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Princess Jasmine in Aladdin, Young Simba in The Lion King and the title character in Mulan and that is just a few of the projects. I looked up Mark's IMDb page and it is pretty much a giant list of all of my favorite Disney Movies. IMBd shows 35 animation credits for major Disney Movies!
Disney Animator Mark Henn Interview and Drawing Class
Sitting down with Mark was one of those life moments you really can't believe is happening. He was so sweet, real, and honest about what it has been like to work as a Disney animator for over 38 years. He has been at the heart of the industry changing from 2-D drawings to computer animation.
He has seen how the industry has shifted from pencil and paper to mouse and computer and been able to adapt along the way. As I sat listening to Mark talk about continuing to live his passion I was so inspired as our own industry continues to change and shift quickly.
Instead of getting frustrated and quitting when the industry changed quickly, Mark has been able to adapt and change with it. He now helps supervise Disney animators and carry the knowledge he learned from some of the old school Disney animators forward. He helps continue the Disney legacy and make sure that the characters continue to be amazing.
