The epic Blue Mule Cocktail is a fun twist on the classic Moscow mule, combining blue curaรงao, vodka, and ginger beer.
Blue Mule
This Blue Mule is a great twist on the Classic Moscow Mule. We still serve it in a copper mug to keep the original look but change the ingredients to make a fun blue cocktail.
I love creating unique spins on the Moscow Mule. I love any excuse to pull out our copper mugs and make a delicious cocktail recipe.
Since we have been home so much and not traveling, I decided to start playing with our favorite classic cocktails and our favorite cocktails from traveling. A couple of years ago, we had the chance to visit a Curaรงao liqueur factory on the island of Curaรงao.
It was fascinating to learn how รงuracao masters make the liqueur and sample several different colors and varieties. Did you know they make a green curaรงao? It is not as common as blue curaรงao.
I brought back a bottle of blue curaรงao from our tour, and I have to tell you I have never been so nervous to open my suitcase when we got home. I put the bottle in a wine bag and wrapped it in soft clothing, but I was still worried I would open my bag and find all my clothes dyed blue.
Thankfully, that did not happen, though it did leak. Thank goodness for a perfectly sealed wine carrier bag.
Ingredients
Here is a quick overview of the simple ingredients for making an epic Blue Mule Drink! The printable recipe card at the bottom of the post includes specific measurements and step-by-step instructions.
- Blue Curaรงao
- Vodka
- Fresh Lime Juice
- Ginger Beerย
Optional Garnishes: Lime Wedge or slice of lime, Orange Wedge, Mint Sprigs, sugar-dusted blueberries, sprigs of rosemaryย ย
Equipment Needed
- Copper Mule Mugs: Copper Mule Mugs are the classic way to serve Moscow Mules. The copper mugs keep them ice-cold and look fantastic.
- Bar Spoon
- Cocktail Jigger: We use these OXO jiggers and love how easy they are to pour from.
- Ice Cube Maker: This ice cube maker produces the best ice cubes for cocktails. It easily fits in the freezer and can make up to 3 trays of round-ball ice at a time.ย
How to Make a Blue Mule
I've included complete instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, but here's a quick version.
Add ice to a copper mug to chill the glass.
Add vodka, blue curaรงao, and fresh lime juice to the copper mug. Top with ginger beer, gently stirring if the mixers do not look like they have combined. Garnish with lime slice
We do not use a cocktail shaker to shake this drink due to the carbonation in the ginger beer. You can shake the Blue curacao and vodka with ice to chill it before adding the ginger beer if desired.
Preparation and Storage
Make Ahead + Storage:
We do not suggest making the Blue Mule beforehand or storing any leftovers. Ginger beer is a carbonated beverage that, like soda, goes flat quickly, so you want to enjoy it while it is fresh.

Recipe Variations
Substitutions:
For a sweeter cocktail, add some simple syrup to your Blue Mule.
Ginger beer contains no alcohol. You can use any brand you prefer.
Vegetarian + Vegan Option: The Blue Mule is vegetarian and vegan, as none of the ingredients are animal-derived or contain animal-derived ingredients.
Gluten-Free:
This blue cocktail is also gluten-free, as no single ingredient, including ginger beer, typically contains gluten. If you are highly sensitive and want to avoid cross-contamination, look for gluten-free labels on your mixers.
Alcohol-Free Option:
Replace the vodka and blue curaรงao with NA alternatives to make alcohol-free Blue Mules.
Larger Group/More Servings:ย
You can make this cocktail pitcher-style by combining all ingredients except ginger beer in a pitcher. When itโs time to serve, stir the mixture with a bartending spoon to recombine them and have ginger beer available so everyone can top off their mugs.
Sugar-Free:ย
The written recipe contains 12 grams of sugar per serving, with the final content depending on your mixers.
We have not seen alcoholic sugar-free alternatives to blue curaรงao. You can lower the sugar content with sugar-free ginger beer or replace both with sugar-free substitutes if you donโt mind a less boozy Blue Mule.
