Cheddar Bay Sausage Balls
I love this twist on classic Bisquick Sausage Balls. The addition of flavor from the Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix is amazing!
It gives these cheddar bay biscuit sausage balls so much flavor while still being a really easy appetizer recipe.
One of my favorite things to host is appetizer parties! Tons of small bites, finger foods, and delicious drinks that everyone can enjoy.
I love that I can get most of the prep time done before guests arrive. I want to be able to spend time with everyone and not be stuck in the kitchen unless I need a few minute break from all the hustle and bustle.
Ingredients
This is a quick overview of the simple ingredients that you'll need to make an sausage balls with Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix. Specific measurements and step by step instructions are included in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.
Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix -
Cream Cheese - We used regular block cream cheese but you could use low-fat or flavored. Just make sure you set it out to softened.
Cheddar Cheese - Freshly shredded cheddar cheese works best. The pre-shredded cheese does not have the moisture needed to hold the sausage balls together. We use regular cheddar cheese but these also taste amazing with sharp cheddar cheese or pepper jack cheese.
Sausage - We use Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage but you could easily use turkey sausage, Italian sausage, hot sausage
Favorite Dipping Sauce - We like to set up a dipping station when serving these sausage balls. They are perfect for dipping in ranch dressing dip, honey mustard, remoulade sauce, queso, smoked ketchup, barbecue sauce, marinara sauce, gravy, or enjoy them plain.
Equipment
Hand Mixer/Stand Mixer - You can mix this with either a hand mixer or your stand mixer. We used our KitchenAid mixer with the dough hook to get everything mixed together.
Large Mixing Bowl - You want to use a bowl large enough to mix everything together.
Small Cookie Scoop - This will help get even Cheddar Bay sausage balls
Parchment Paper -ย I love that I can use parchment paper to help make it easier to remove the sausage balls. They also make clean-up a breeze. If you are not using parchment paper you will want to spray non-stick cooking spray on your baking sheet to help the cookies not stick. You can also use aluminum foil.
Baking Sheets - We are huge fans of these baking sheets with sides. You don't have to worry; you will remove the sausage balls with Cheddar Bay Biscuit Mix from the oven and have them slide right off.
Heat resistant potholdersย - A couple of years ago, we had a fire scare when we didn't realize we had turned a burner on, and a cloth potholder caught fire. Thankfully we walked by the kitchen and saw the smoke and were able to get it out ourselves. Since then, we have only used these heat-resistant potholders.
Paper Towels - You can spread out the cooked sausage balls on paper towels to absorb any extra grease.

Preparation and Storage
Make Ahead - These can be made the day before you plan to serve them. Shape the Cheddar Bay Sausage balls and store the uncooked sausage balls in the refrigerator overnight. Bake when you are ready to serve them.
Storage - Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge.
Freezing/How to Freeze - These can be frozen ahead of time and stored in the freezer. Prep them and flash freeze them by placing the baking sheet in the freezer until sausage balls are frozen.ย Pop them in the oven when you are ready to bake them. Just plan on adding a few extra minutes for them to bake. There is no need to thaw them before baking.
How to reheat - Pop them in the microwave or toaster oven and warm them up.
Recipe Variations
Additions - For even more flavor add in scallions, garlic, extra spices,
Vegetarian - Veggie ground sausage can be used.
Vegan - Use vegan plant-based ground sausage and vegan cheese. Switch the cheddar bay mixture for vegan biscuit mix.
Gluten-Free - You can use the Gluten Free Red Lobster Cheddar Bay Biscuit mix available on Amazon.
Larger Group/More Servings - This recipe can easily be doubled but I would make it as listed twice instead of doubling the ingredients. The sausage ball mixture filled my mixer bowl.
