This may be one of the easiest crockpot recipes we have shared! This Crock Pot Cherry Dump Cake Recipe has a whopping three ingredients and is so dang easy to make it should be labeled a dangerous dessert!
Crock-Pot Cherry Dump Cake Recipe
You know one of those desserts that is plain and simple easy to make! A dessert that only takes a few seconds to think about and then you have a crockpot full of luscious flavors and delights.
Yep, that is exactly what this crockpot cherry dump cake is.
While I don't have any caution tape or warning tape to wrap around the recipe, I will tell you that this Crock-Pot Cherry Dump Cake disappeared when I made it.
I barely had a chance to grab a bit to take a picture for this post. My dear and amazing Husband kept sneaking back to the crockpot.

Trust me you will want to buy double the ingredients because you will end up making this cake a 2nd time really soon after you make it the first time. lol!
I was able to grab a bit for a photo and then that plate magically disappeared and would you believe I never even got to try this dessert.
I served it during slow cooker Saturday lunch with John's mom, and I was working on wrapping up the Bourbon Baked Ham I made. When I finally got to a point I was going to sit down and enjoy a plate of this crockpot cherry dump cake, it was all gone...
I guess that means I am going to have to make it again on a day when I am the only one home to enjoy it ๐
This recipe was first shared on November 20, 2013! Since then I have made a couple of changes though nothing really major. The biggest change is I doubled the amount of cherry pie filling. I wanted there to be a thicker layer of cherries with this cake.

This is a great go-to. I have made this so many times!! I only use one can of Lucky Leaf cherry pie filling, this brand is loaded with cherries. In fact just put all ingredients in the crock...
Jamie
HI!! So I just tried this recipe and Girl Yasss! I agree with you, the next time I make this, and I will, I will use two cans of cherry filling. I didn't grease my crock and it turned out great. Thanks for the recipe. I look forward to trying more of your creations
Shelley
I did this with a can of pineapple and a can of peaches cause I didnโt have pie filling. Sprinkled a little sugar on fruit. Cooked for three hours on high and it came out delicious!

I just don't see why anyone would want to make this in a crockpot when they can make it in an oven in 45 minutes. I guess if you're having a big crowd over and your oven is full of other things, then the crockpot might be the solution. To me, too many people are trying to turn easy recipes into big productions by using Crockpots, Instant pots, Air-fryers etc. when it's much easier to use the everyday oven. If it saves a bunch of time, I can see the sense in it, but otherwise, no..... this takes far less timet o make in a oven. I use my crockpot for things like soups and other meals when I have to go out and want it ready when I get home. Otherwise, I just don't see any sense in it and wonder how others feel?
April
I like using my slow cooker because I live in Florida. Anytime I can make something without using the oven it is great. Keeps from heating up the house more lol

We like to go camping and things donโt cook so good in the little camper ovens, especially baked dishes. So cooking this in a crockpot throughout the afternoon is a great option! Make it in the afternoon and by the evening when weโre ready for something sweet to eat around a campfire itโs a great option!
Judith Bayer
this is the perfect recipe for me - 3 ingredients. I just bought the perfect crock pot for this - rectangle and low.
Natalie
Like many of the other commenters, mine did not turn out "crumbly"(still mushy). I even cooked it on low for 4 hrs then on high for 2 hrs.
Sandy Cockrell
Try room temp butter instead of melted. Mine is sticky too, I just put it in the crock pot. I wish I hadn't melted the butter completely
Sarah
ive tried this receipt twice and both times my cake mix and butter mixture is just a straight up sticky dough. Its not at all crumbly. I've double check the ingredients multiple times I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Any suggestions?
ang
Gonna have to try this!
what if you don't have a crook pot, could you use the oven, at what temperature and for how long?
Tammilee
You could use the oven. I have not tried making it in the oven so i am not sure of the temp or how long to cook it.

I make my dump cakes in the oven. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes. I also just sprinkle the dry cake mix on top of 2 cans of cherry pie filling and pour 1/2 cup melted butter over top then bake.
Sandra Kazlaskas
Started making dump cakes over 50 years ago. Used 1 (20 ounce) can cherry pie filling plus 1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple (w/juice ), sprinkle the cake mix on evenly, sliced the margarine /butter (egg slicer works great) placed evenly over surface, on festive occasions topped with nuts (pecans, walnuts, macadamia, hazelnut, etc) before baking @350ยฐ 45 - 55 minutes, use toothpick test to ensure no doughiness in center.
You can use apple pie filling and cranberries with a spice cake or carrot cake mix. Or try crushed pineapple with manarin oranges with the carrot cake. So many possibilities!
Sandra Kazlaskas
If making this cake in the oven, do NOT mix the ingredients, layer... or you get a sticky mess. I've done this in a slow cooker, again with the dry cake mix (really good with white cake mix - not angel food). Just my experience making this.
Donna
I use an oven Dump Cake Recipe. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x11 baking dish. Pour 1 can undrained pineapple into greased baking dish, cover with 1 can cherry "more fruit" pie filling, sprinkle dry 2 layer size yellow cake mix over pie filling, Drizzle 1 cup melted butter over the top of the dry cake mix. Sprinkle 7 oz coconut and 1 cup chopped pecans over the top. Bake 45 tp 55 minutes or until top is brown and bubbly.
Sharon
Yes, when I've had to 'make it quick'... I HAVE put the ingred. into a greased 9"x13" pan & baked it for about 50 min. @ 350โข w/no cover on it. It's a bit crisper than cooked in my crockpot, but, I like it even better crisper!!!
I did use 2 cans of cherry pie filling & 1/4 cup more butter...(3/4 cup in al) .....and, all the butter I used, I cut into little slices & put the sliced pieces all over the dry cake mix, instead of mixing the butter w/cake mix.
Kimber
This is GREAT! But instead of yellow cake mix, I used Devil's food. I will definitely be making this again!
Liz
I made the crock pot cherry dump cake today I'm still amazed how easy it is an great it taste. A big hit with my family. Thank you for this great recipe. Liz
Tammilee
Liz, I am so glad you enjoyed the recipe! It is one of our favorite recipes to make!
Mindy
After 2 hours on high my cake is still mushy..it's in a large crock pot..gonna let it sit longer and see what happens.
Chelsea
Tried making this tonight.. it's been on low for 4.5 hours now and still mushy. Turning it up to high and see how that goes.
Sally K.
What a scrumptious dessert, and it looks so easy to make! Great idea!
Kim
how come after 2 hours on high my cake was still mush? It was a dry cake mix not with the added eggs and oil or anything right?? thanks
Beth
I would say that this cake was made in a larger crock pot, sounds like yours is smaller perhaps?
Michelle
This is a dessert me and my kids make all the time except we add drained crushed pineapples and bake it. It never lasts more than a day. It's so good.
Brenda
I made this yesterday using Smart Balance Butter and I think it turned out fine. Sadly I forgot to put it in the fridge last night... Since it's only me and my better half I have to "dump" it! ๐ not good on my part.
Tammilee
oh no! I am glad you enjoyed it while you had the chance.
Laura
Brenda, why did you have to "dump" it? I leave mine out all the time. I agree with someone else, it's MUCH better with a can of crushed pineapple, UNdrained. This is my absolute favorite "go to" dessert, been making it for 30+ years.
Renee Marie
this is genius. I can't wait to try this out. And there are so many pie flavors to choose from.
Jayne
I got your recipe for this from a Facebook friend and am making it even as I write this. I put it on about 4 hours ago on the low setting on my crock pot. However, the cake mix doesn't seem to be cooking, or maybe it's supposed to be of a different consistency than baked. I also wonder if I should have cooked it on the high setting. Just for future reference, how should the cake look when it's done? Thanks!
Tammilee
Hi, The cake def looks a bit different from when you bake it. It turns into a crumble like topping
Jayne
Thanks Tammilee! I'm not known for my culinary crock pot prowess, but this looked so good I just had to try it for Super Bowl Sunday! Incidentally, my team is the Bears so I don't have a dog in the fight this year.
Tammilee
Let us know what you think of it. It is one of my favorite easy recipes for the crock pot.
We are celebrating Crockuary this month and will have a new crock pot recipe everyday
Jasmine
salted or unsalted butter?
karen
when you say double do you mean just pie filling or everything?
Tammilee
I would double the pie filling.
Diane
Do you think this would work in the oven too?... I already have something going on in a crock pot
Tammilee
Diane, I think it would work great in the oven.
Diane
Tammilee, this maybe redundant but what do you think of using a chocolate cake mix instead?
Tammilee
Diane, I think that sounds like heaven in a crock pot! I love this idea.
Robin
Would this work with other kinds of pie filling?
Tammilee
Robin, YES!!!! I have a couple more coming up that taste amazing.
Robin
Thank you! We are not fond of cherry here but I will try peach!
Tammilee
Robin, please let me know how peach turns out. We also have a Crock Pot peach crumb cake for the crock pot - > https://www.tammileetips.com/2013/03/crock-pot-peach-crumble/
and a Crock Pot Peach Cobbler -> https://www.tammileetips.com/2013/09/crock-pot-peach-cobbler/
Shelly
Can I use margarine instead of butter?
Tammilee
Shelley, I have not tried it with margarine. I am not sure if the flavor would change but it is worth a shot.
Mary M
What size cake box did you use?
Tammilee
Hi, I used a regular 16oz cake mix.
Lee Ellen
I've made this many times, but I also put a can of crushed pineapple in and it's awesome!!!!
Tammilee
Lee, That sounds fantastic! I am going to have to try it with Pineapple. Thanks for the suggestions!
mary dyer
What size crock pot are you using?
Janet Burke
Lee, do you put the pineapple in with the cherry pie filling?? I am going to make this today and what size can of pineapple??
Lee Ellen
I'm sorry I just saw this post. Yes, I usually put the cherries, and then the pineapple and then the cake mix, butter and I also put crushed walnuts on top of that!!!
Patty
How many people does this serve and can it be doubled for a large gathering?
Cherri
So if I understand this you do not make the cake mix just mix with butter, is that correct? I've never tried something like that. But so looks good. And its everyday ingrediants in the cabinet.
Thank you
Tammilee
Hi Cherri, Yep, you just add butter. Probably one of the easiest recipes we make.
Amy Ketelaar
I do this but add a can of crushed pineapple undrained...YUMMY!!!
Tammilee
Amy, that sounds fantastic. I am going to have to try it with pineapple added to it.
Michele
I was going to add that comment as well...I have never made it in the crockpot but same recipe I oven with the crushed pineapple. Easy peasy, kid favorite and they can make it themselves!
Tonia
Iโm headed to the grocery store for these ingredients RIGHT now. Look for my post tomorrow. ๐

Cinny
Ohhh, that definitely looks delish!
Camille
Yum! I have this huge bag of frozen cherries I need to use up. I bet I could adapt for them!
Jennifer
Dang girl, this looks delicious!!! Off to pin it now!
Melissa Bybee-Fields
We are not big on cherries...I wonder how this would be with some other type of canned pie filling like apples or blackberries?
Colette
I have made this using peach pie filling. It is awesome
Kayla
Apple pie filling with spice cake is sooooo good just saying ๐
