Cabo San Lucas Whale Watching Excursion. There is something so magical about seeing a Humpback Whale in the wild. They are the size of a school bus, yet they glide through the water so quietly. During my cruise on the Carnival Splendor, I had the opportunity to enjoy the Whale Watching and Coastal Cruise excursion! I have to thank Carnival for hosting my trip and giving me the chance to enjoy whale watching in Cabo.
Cabo San Lucas Whale Watching
This excursion was pure magic and a definite must-do for anyone who loves whales and scenic views! I visited towards the end of February and there were quite a few whales. We had only left the bay a few minutes when we saw our first mom and calf.
The excursion meets on the pier in Cabo San Lucas so make sure and give yourself time to tender into town before the excursion leaves. From the pier, we headed right over to the Cabo Arch for photos of the arch, Lovers Beach, and the sea lion colony.
The boat used for the excursion is large, so you can choose which deck you want to be on and if you want to be inside. We went to the top deck and had beautiful views of the Cabo Arch and Sea Lion colony.
I liked being on the top because we could easily move from side to side depending on where the whales were spotted. The captain did a great job of trying to keep the whales right in front of us so we could all easily see them.
One tip is to keep an eye out for where the small guided boats head and follow them to see whales. They are normally zipping right to the whale so this is a great way to know where you need to stand to have a view of the whales.
We saw quite a few Humpbacks during the couple of hours we were out on the water. While we didn’t see any whales breaching (sadly) we did get to see a ton of whale’s tails and puffs of air.
I wish we could have spent hours on the water looking at the whales! I would have happily spent the entire day taking pics and watching the whales.
This is a great excursion for whale lovers and non-whale lovers, if that is a thing. 😊 The ship serves unlimited drinks during the cruise, so you can always sit back with a pina colada, rum punch or assorted tropical drinks and just soak up the sun and scenic views.
The excursion is super laid back and chill which is perfect for anyone who just wants to sit back and watch the world go by. Plus if you are a whale lover you will be super excited to see them!
Travel tips and things to know about the Whale Watching and Coastal Cruise Excursion
-Wear sunscreen! You will be most likely out on the open deck and the sun is crazy bright. I had on 35 SPF and still got a bit pink by the end of the excursion
-Be prepared for wind and sun. It can go from warm to hot to chilly in a few minutes. I had a light coverup which helped a lot.
-The boat servers both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the entire trip. There is also chips and salsa to snack on.
-The upper portion of the deck has a lot of open spaces that things could slide under and off the ship. Make sure you have a bag for your items that you can wear or hold onto.
-If you are in Cabo for two days on your cruise the excursion may be offered at different times. Check to see the time it is offered especially if you want to have daytime in Cabo to explore.
-The ship docks back at the main pier in Cabo and you can easily walk around and explore town just be aware of what time the last tender back to the ship is.
