Spicy Buffalo Pretzels
I love appetizer and snack recipes I can make before an event. These Buffalo Pretzels make a big batch of pretzels that taste amazing!
The buffalo sauce adds a great bite of flavor. These Buffalo Pretzel Bites will pair perfectly with a plate of vegetables for an easy appetizer perfect for game day events.
You could even make a giant charcuterie board with these buffalo pretzel pieces, veggies, blue cheese dressing, celery sticks, and more!
Go wild and pair them with a buffalo chicken dip so you have all the buffalo sauce recipes present. LOL!
I made these in August and honestly wished it was January when the kitchen heated up from the oven. I am going to have to make these again when the weather turns cold.
We have been working on a ton of new recipes trying to make up new appetizers before the holidays and game day weekends are here.
Ingredients List
This is a quick overview of the simple ingredients that you'll need to make delicious Buffalo Pretzels! Specific measurements and step-by-step instructions are included in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Franks Buffalo Hot Sauce
- Pretzels
- Butter
- Onion Powder
- Garlic Powder
Franks Hot Sauce - We like the Buffalo Hot Sauce, but you could use any flavor you enjoy.
Pretzels - We used pretzel nuggets, but this recipe would work on pretzel sticks or regular pretzels. Make sure they are hard pretzels so they bake correctly.
Seasoning - You can easily switch out the spices and replace them with a packet ofย Hidden Valley Dry Ranch dressing mixย to make Buffalo Ranch Pretzels.
For additional flavor feel free to add in a tablespoon of Worcestershire Sauce, a pinch of salt, or another seasoning.
Equipment Needed
Small saucepan
Large Bowl - Make sure the bowl is large enough to handle all of the pretzels and stir them into the hot sauce mix.
Wooden Spoons - I like to use flat wooden spoons to stir the pretzels but you could also use tongs.
Largeย Baking Sheetย - We are huge fans of these baking sheets that have sides. You don't have to worry; you are going to remove the pretzels from the oven and have the slide right off.
Parchment Paper - If you don't have parchment you could also line the baking sheet with aluminum foil.
Heat resistant potholdersย - A couple of years ago we had a fire scare when we didn't realize we had turned a burner on and a cloth potholder caught fire. Thankfully we walked by the kitchen and saw the smoke and were able to get it out ourselves. Since then we have only used these heat-resistant potholders.
How to make Spicy Buffalo Pretzels
I've included complete instructions in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, but here's a quick version.
Step 1ย - Heat butter and hot sauce together in a sauce pan over low heat until butter has melted. Add in seasoning and stir to combine.
Step 2ย - Add pretzels to a large bowl and pour hot sauce/butter mixture over the pretzels. Stir the pretzels in the sauce until all pieces are well coated.
Step 3ย - Spread pretzels on a parchment lined baking sheet evenly. Bake in 10 minute increments stirring after every 10 minutes.
The pretzels will look wet!
Step 4 - Remove pretzels from the oven and let cool on the pan. The pretzels may still look wet at this point. They will harden as they sit and cool.
Do not stir them while they are cooling off! They may be soft enough to break apart before hardening.
Preparation and Storage
Make Ahead โ Spicy Buffalo Pretzel Pieces can be made a day ahead of time and stored in an airtight container.
Storage โ Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
Freezing/How to freeze โ These can be frozen in a freezer safe container. Note we have not tried freezing them since my husband inhales the every time I make them.
Recipe Variations
Substitutions - If you can't find the small pretzel nuggets you can break up pretzel rods or use pretzel chips, pretzel sticks, or full size pretzels.
Add some Ranch Seasoning mix for even more flavor.
Switch out the garlic and onion powder for your favorite spices.
Vegetarian Option - This recipe is vegetarian
Vegan Option โ Use plant based butter, check the label on the pretzels and buffalo sauce just to make sure they are vegan.
Gluten Free - Use Gluten-Free pretzels, check the labels on the buffalo sauce to make sure there are no gluten-fillers.
Smaller Serving Size โ The recipe servings can be changed on the recipe card below.
Make it Spicy โThese buffalo pretzels have a kick but you can always use spicy hot sauce mixture if you want them spicier.
Larger Group/More servings โ This recipe can be doubled. Just make sure you have enough baking sheets to spread the pretzels out evenly.
Recipe Tips
If you are having a large party you can easily double this recipe and make two platters of pretzel bites. You will need two baking sheets at minimum.
